The realism and this dinner table scene is uncanny. I can feel every bit of it as winds of these times were passed down through my father and his mother. I do have it in me, but see no need to release any of that in the modern day Friday night.

Hoppin John’s is one of my favorites. I love anything with black eyed peas. I actually prefer pinkeye purple hull peas, but they are hard to find outside of Mississippi. I have family in Mississippi so luckily I get them sent to me whenever I need to restock.

Nothing could’ve of calmed him down. However the guest should of showed some heart and kindly walked away…from all of it, daughter included. Everyone at that table was educated except Chalky. He’s a down-home country boy who married a light-skinned woman (a status-symbol in those days), and sent his kids to good schools. He wasn’t in their class

He pretends to read. Wears expensive suits. Deals with people that undermine him. Can he at least be himself in his home. Not accepted by his own family. Too much

i would imagine that many men nowadays feel this way around the house, just like Chalky here in the 1920s. They provide everything for their families: money, food. the house, insurance, pratical steady knowledge so that the family sails along smoothly. The family slowly starts to think that it all just happens, like magic, and takes him for granted, indeed, even comes to resent and look down upon him, amazingly. Just listen to her tone when she shouts "ALBERT!" Like she was scolding a schoolboy. "Bad Albert. very bad! Go to your room!" While whole bunch of them couldn't even pee on the ground if he didn't point to a spot first.

It seems everyone is very understanding of his anger because his wife implies that their regular meal wasn't good enough. In fact she actually says it's not an appropriate meal for guests. Does she not have a right to her own feelings and pride also? Even if it makes no sense to others? His house? Her house too! I've never watched this show but from this scene alone I derive that he is a very mean person. He shouldn't treat his home, his guests, and more importantly, his family this way!
